Ce livre est le fruit d’une expérience historiographique menée par l’un des plus grands historiens de la Première Guerre mondiale : après avoir tant travaillé sur les combattants des tranchées et leur expérience de la guerre, Stéphane Audoin-Rouzeau a choisi de se tourner vers les siens.Même si elles s’y apparentent parfois, les pages que l’on va lire ne constituent pas un récit de famille. Et quoique l’on puisse sans doute s’y tromper, ces mêmes pages ne sont pas non plus un essai d’ego-histoire. En effet, Stéphane Audoin-Rouzeau n’a pas tenté d’écrire une autobiographie d’historien, mais de raconter le cheminement d’un événement, de retrouver la manière dont la Grande Guerre a traversé l'existence de trois générations, quitte à inscrire ses effets au-delà même de leur propre vie.Quelle histoire est un livre saisissant, sensible et maîtrisé, où l’historien s’efforce au fond de retrouver l’Histoire dans l’homme.

About the Author
Stéphane Audoin-Rouzeau est directeur d’études à l’EHESS et président du Centre international de recherche de l’Historial de la Grande Guerre (Péronne-Somme). Il est notamment l’auteur de 1914-1918, la violence de guerre, Gallimard, 2014 et de Combattre. Une anthropologie historique de la guerre moderne (XIXe-XXIe siècle), Seuil, 2008.
