Dans un quartier de Tokyo, Tarô, trentenaire divorcé pas très dynamique mais qui a quelque chose à enterrer, observe sa voisine qui observe la maison d’en face. Tous deux sont invités par leurs voisins à fêter leur installation. Voilà un prétexte tout trouvé pour s’immiscer... Dans ce roman doux-amer, ce que les personnages ne livrent pas de leurs sentiments, ce sont les lieux qui le révèlent. Le grand ensemble où vit Tarô, promis à la démolition et qui se vide peu à peu, la vieille maison de style occidental, terre d’enfance, paradis perdu qui reprend vie, réactive la possibilité du bonheur.

Shibasaki Tomoka est née en 1973 dans l'arrondissement Taisho à Osaka. Elle fait ses débuts littéraires en 2000 avec le roman Kyô no dekigoto, (A Day on the Planet). Sono machi no ima wa (Aujourd'hui dans cette ville) est finaliste du prix Akutagawa, en 2006. Prix qui lui est enfin décerné en 2014 pour son roman Jardin de printemps (Haru no niwa). Entre-temps, Nete mo samete mo (Nuit et Jour) avait été couronné du prix Noma des jeunes auteurs.
