Cette femme, célèbre pour sa grande beauté, sa fatuité, sa fin lamentable, a entretenu un rapport très étrange avec son image : plus encore qu'aucun de ses contemporains, plus encore que Montesquiou, le modèle du Charlus de Proust.La Castiglione a confié le sens de son existence à la photographie. Ancêtre des héros modernes de l'autoportrait, cette beauté fatale se rendait chez le photographe comme certains vont au coffre y placer leur bien. Et pourtant, la beauté semble avoir déserté ces clichés ; ne subsiste qu'une tristesse et une solitude effroyables. Croyant exposer sa seule beauté, elle demanda à la photographie de l'accompagner dans le ravissement comme dans l'abjection et surexposa l'effondrement de son existence.Sous les bibelots d'un Empire à son apogée, la narratrice croise quelques questions toutes contem- poraines : l'effroi de son propre corps, la peur du regard de l'autre, l'attachement à quelques vestiges qui rassurent. Une image en fait surgir une autre, une femme en rappelle d'autres : l'autre femme, cruelle ou désirable.
