Island Hotel Stories - Hardcover

9782843234484: Island Hotel Stories

Synopsis

Everyone dreams of living on an island, perhaps for just a few days, or a month, a year or even forever... Islands fascinate us and fill us with wonder. Even just thinking about an island can give people pleasure. Roberto Rossellini and Ingrid Bergman loved Stromboli. Spielberg took Indiana Jones to the jungles of Sri Lanka. Jacques Brel sang the beauty of the Marquesas Islands. Princess Margaret found peace and tranquillity in Mustique. Marlon Brando and Paul-Emile Victor made their homes in Polynesia. Richard Branson and other modern-day adventurers have actually bought the islands of their dreams, renting them out or transforming them into island-hotels. Tiny islets or vast expanses, famous or secret, lush and tropical or bare and windswept, they all attract the traveler. This is a book for dreamers, for travelers, and for anyone who wants to learn about the history of these islands and open their minds to adventure, tropical sun, jungles, lagoons, forgotten creeks and fabulous hotels.

About the Author

Born in Chile, Francisca Matteoli spent her childhood in Latin America. Today, from her Paris home, she writes travel books and contributes to National Geographic France, Conde Nast Traveller, Air France Hommes and the Tribune de San Luis Obispo. She is the author of the successful Hotel Stories: Legendary Hideaways of the World published by Assouline.

From Publishers Weekly

Matteoli hops between far-flung isles from Bali to Ibiza (and a few closer-to-home ones like Martha's Vineyard and Key West) to give readers a taste of the luxe life in this compendium of exclusive island hotels. To arrive at many of the isles, a hydroplane or puddle-jumper is required, and Matteoli is fond of dropping the names of the locations' frequent visitors, from fashion designers like Oscar de la Renta to artists like Henri Matisse. For each of the 28 entries, Matteoli (Hotel Stories: Legendary Hideaways of the World) notes the island's claim to fame (e.g., a movie was filmed there; a celebrity owns property there), a bit of its history and its premiere hotels. Despite the book's opulent feel, many of the hotels mentioned are, in fact, affordable-if you can foot the price of getting there. For example, an off-peak room at The Aegialis Hotel is only $57 a night, but it's located off the coast of Greece in the Cyclades Islands. The book is illustrated with over 150 color photos-their grainy quality is reminiscent of 1960s and '70s postcards, adding to the book's glamorous, movie star feel.
