Coleman Moore passe le plus clair de son temps dans le cockpit de son bateau, en cale sèche dans une marina du Michigan. À cause de ses mains brisées, il a abandonné son métier de guitariste de jazz. Cet homme, dont la seule attache au mitan de sa vie est sa fille Heather, convoque au fil de ses méditations nocturnes et alcoolisées les fantômes du passé, comme pour conjurer son désarroi. Son père, marin expérimenté, est mort noyé dans le lac Huron après avoir laissé péricliter son commerce de matériel de navigation. C’est aussi dans la cabine de son ketch, qui lui servait à passer en contrebande de l’alcool canadien pendant la Prohibition, que son grand-père Havelock se tira une balle dans la tête plutôt que de rendre les armes devant la maladie. Jeune homme, celui qui devait s’inscrire dans cette lignée de navigateurs – son père l’avait prénommé Jason – avait pourtant tourné le dos aux bateaux. Tout sourit au brillant musicien qu’il était devenu : Coleman, le nom de scène qu’il adopte dès son premier concert, va de succès en succès avec son trio, et vit avec la femme qu’il aime. Comment il n’a eu de cesse de se saborder lui-même, c’est bien ce qu’évoque cette somptueuse dérive glissant des grands lacs aux boîtes enfumées. Tout au long de ce roman construit comme un morceau de jazz, les thèmes s’amplifient, les couleurs s’affermissent. Du noir et blanc des caves de Chicago et de l’éclat métallique de l’eau des lacs, on passe à la couleur d’un avenir que Coleman va finir par reconstruire. Joseph Coulson, dans une langue fluide et inspirée, dit avec ampleur les espoirs et les rêves brisés d’une Amérique ordinaire.
