Synopsis

So wrote Richard Francis Burton, while preparing for an exploration of the lower Congo in 1863. Tormented by the question of "why?", his answer "the devil drives" applies not only to his explorations, but to the whole of his turbulent life. The nature of his demon, the source of his restlessness, has baffled many biographers.
Drawing from Burton's own published works and from the few manuscripts that managed to escape destruction by Lady Burton, Fawn Brodie explains the "why?" and in doing so creates a fascinating portrait.

About the Author
Fawn Brodie, née en septembre 1915 dans une famille mormone, obtint en 1936 un Master of Arts en littérature anglaise et eut, au fur et à mesure de ses études, de plus en plus de doutes spirituels. Elle publia en 1945, juste après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, une biographie très personnelle de Joseph Smith, fondateur du mormonisme, et fut excommuniée tout en ayant de son côté perdu la foi. Fascinée par la psychohistoire ¿ l'application de théories psychanalytiques à l'étude des personnalités historiques ¿, elle écrivit en 1974 une autre biographie controversée sur le président américain Thomas Jefferson. Elle s'est éteinte en 1981 des suites d'un cancer. Son dernier ouvrage, sur Richard Nixon, fut publié inachevé.
