A trail-blazer in French writing on jazz and still regularly cited by leading international critics today, when it first came out in 1954 Hommes et problèmes du jazz set a bench mark. Ironically, although it remained in print in translations, in France it was all but scrapped before it was re-published in the Epistrophy series in 1981 (Parenthèses, three subsequent reprints). We are now bringing it out in our Eupalinos series, a collection dedicated to jazz and other improvised musics. This book did not set out to tell the story of jazz, but for the first time it took jazz seriously and aimed at investigating more than its mere background phenomena, focusing on the musical output and itineraries of its leading musicians.

About the Author:

André Hodeir (1921-2011) was a composer, musicologist and writer. A jazz violonist in the 40s, he later turned to composing and writing. His Hommes et problèmes du jazz (1954) has become a classic of jazz criticism and is perhaps the most widely translated work on the subject. Later books included: Jazzistiques (Parenthèses) and Les Mondes du jazz (Rouge Profond). He also published Musikant (Seuil), Play-Back (Minuit) and several collections of short stories (J. Losfeld, Rouge Profond).
