Located at an important point along the frontier between Europe and Asia, the northern Caucasus has always been a cosmopolitan region with an ethnic mix comprising the indigenous population and nomads from other areas. This study examines historical and archaeological evidence for the area dating from the 1st to 7th century AD. The authors discuss the interaction of different groups during the Roman period, the period of great migrations of groups like the Huns and Sarmatians in the 4th and 3rd centuries, and the empire-builders of the 5th and 6th centuries. Finally, the formation of independent kingdoms in the early Middle Ages, which representes a crucial period which laid the foundations for the ethnic make-up of the area today, is discussed. Book Description Paperback. Condition: NEUF.
