Avant ce saut dans l’inconnu, Neville vivra toutefois une journée capitale, une journée passée en compagnie d’un photographe prestigieux, auprès duquel il va apprendre à ouvrir les yeux. Vladislavic va utiliser la métaphore de la photographie pour parler de son propre devenir-écrivain.

L’écrivain sud-africain Ivan Vladislavic, né en 1957, vit et travaille à Johannesbourg. Il a publié recueils de nouvelles et romans, et gagné plusieurs prix littéraires. C’est l’une des voix les plus originales d’Afrique du Sud, elle est caractérisée par un mélange de fantaisie et de références à des faits réels, et par un ton mordant qui jongle entre comique et tragique. Il semble qu’avec l’abolition de l’apartheid, l’humour soit entré en littérature par la grande porte.
