François Hébert a enseigné la littérature à l'Université de Montréal, il a dirigé la revue Liberté et il a été critique littéraire au quotidien Le Devoir. Il est aussi l'auteur de romans, d'essais et de poèmes, dont, à l'Hexagone, Les pommes les plus hautes (1997) et Comment serrer la main de ce mort-là (finaliste aux prix Alfred-DesRochers et du Festival international de poésie de Trois-Rivières, 2007).
