Synopsis
Two young children, separated from their parents, flee the 1755 deportation from New-Brunswick with their grandfather. Their escape transforms into an eight-year journey.

En 1755, pour échapper à la déportation, plusieurs familles acadiennes de la butte à Pétard, maintenant Saint-Joseph-de-Memramcook, au Nouveau-Brunswick, se réfugient dans les bois à l'arrivée des troupes anglaises.
C'est ainsi que deux jeunes, Prémélia et Fidèle, brusquement séparés de leur père et de leur mère, se retrouvent en forêt avec leur grand-père que l'on surnomme Pétard. Leur fuite, qu'ils croyaient temporaire, se transforme en un éprouvant exil qui durera huit ans. La présence de la veuve Rosalie et l'aide précieuse du Mi'kmaq Kitpou ne parviendront pas toujours à soulager leurs peines.

About the Author
Diane Carmel Léger a grandi au pied de la butte à Pétard, dans le village de Memramcook, au Nouveau-Brunswick. Elle a enseigné en immersion française pendant vingt ans dans l'Île de Vancouver. C'est le mal du pays qui l'a amenée à écrire son premier roman jeunesse, La butte à Pétard (Éditions d'Acadie, 1989 ; réédition Bouton d'or Acadie 2004, Prix Hackmatack 2006). Depuis, elle a écrit plusieurs livres salués par la critique parmi lesquels sont le bestseller Maxine's Tree (Orca Book Publishers, 1990), gagnant du Canadian Children's Book Centre Award 1991 et son plus récent roman, La patate cadeau ou la vraie histoire de la poutine râpée, finaliste au Prix Tamarac. De retour en Acadie, elle continue d'écrire et de faire des tournées dans les écoles. Elle adore présenter ses albums inspirés d'expériences personnelles et ses romans basés sur l'histoire des Acadiens, un sujet qui la passionne depuis sa jeunesse.
