Figure majeure de l'art conceptuel américain, Allen Ruppersberg (né en 1944 à Cleveland, Ohio) a participé à l'émergence du mouvement à Los Angeles à la fin des années 1960, aux côtés d'artistes tels que Bas Jan Ader, Ger Val Elk, William Leavitt, Allan McColllum ou William Wegman. Comme ceux-ci et à l'instar d'autres pionniers comme Ed Ruscha ou John Baldessari, Ruppersberg inscrit ses images, photographies réalisées par ses soins ou trouvées, dans des stratégies textuelles et narratives qui interrogent le rôle de l'artiste et les relations entre nature et culture, texte et image ou fiction et réalité.
