This hefty boxed set, published with the help of the Veuve Clicquot Champagne company, focuses entirely on the art and architecture of Pavlovsk, the 18th-century palace near St. Petersburg built for the Grand Duke Pavel Petrovich and his wife, Maria Feodorovna. The first and more interesting volume provides a brief history of the palace and its inhabitants. The bulk is taken up by dozens of fine photographs illustrating Pavlovsk's buildings and the beautiful park surrounding them along the Slavianka River. Volume 2, on the palace collections, gets off to a bad start by launching into a detailed description of the engraved cameos that the grand duchess spent much of her time carving and that are now preserved at the palace. The tastes of the duke and duchess prove to be unexceptional. The elaborate furniture collection is a hodgepodge of Empire and Rococo styles, and the subject matter of the paintings only occasionally strays from the allegorical. Not a necessary purchase.
