In this sumptuous volume, Richard examines the connection between North America and VersaillesDor, more broadly, the French monarchy. He describes French exploration of the New World, the building and function of the Palace of Versailles, French aid to the Colonies during the War of American Independence, and various early representatives of the new nation, such as Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. Throughout, we also learn much about the palace and surrounding gardens. The story continues through World War I and General Pershing, who was honored at the palace. Between 1924 and 1932, John D. Rockefeller Jr. donated $32 million for the restoration of buildings and gardens. In 1936, the restoration was completed and Rockefeller duly honored. It is amazing to see how much work was needed as a result of long neglect and equally amazing to see the quality and detail of the restoration. Equally interesting are the many donations from Americans of some of the original furnishings that had been dispersed. The story closes with a discussion of the Versailles Foundation and the continuing restoration work.
