Synopsis
A la fin du XVIIIe siècle, les Fermiers généraux ont la charge de récolter l'impôt sur les denrées entrant dans Paris. Pour éviter les fraudeurs et les contrebandiers, l'idée de ceindre Paris d'une muraille de 24 km fait jour. C'est à l'architecte Claude Nicolas Ledoux que revient la charge d'en ériger les portes, plus connues sous le nom de propylées de Paris. En trois ans, une cinquantaine de barrières d'octroi sont édifiées.Animées par le souffle d'une architecture visionnaire, elles présentent chacune un répertoire stylistique différent. Ledoux s'illustre avec génie dans l'art de conjuguer la forme et la fonction, l'idéal et le contestable. Quatre d'entre elles sont arrivées jusqu'à nous, rescapées ayant fini par rejoindre, in fine, le panthéon de l'architecture française. Avec l'histoire des propylées, l'auteur nous convie à une promenade poétique et sensible le long des murailles de Paris ; grâce à ses illustrations originales, il nous permet la découverte d'une exceptionnelle série architecturale, restituée pour la première fois dans son intégralité.
