Byron Burns abandonne sa caravane pour retrouver son ami Bobby Long à la Nouvelle-Orleans. Les deux hommes se connaissent depuis l'Université, sont unis par une amitié paradoxale et par une passion commune pour la littérature et l'alcool. Ils s'installent dans la maison de leur amie Lorraine.Quand cette dernière meurt, Bobby et Byron voient débarquer sa fille Hanna, âgée de 17 ans. Cette jeune fille, totalement désabusée, veut vendre la demeure de sa mère au plus vite et partir avec l'argent pour retrouver sa vie, entre petits boulots et boy friend décevant.Bobby Long et Byron Burns ne peuvent supporter sa résignation. Les deux losers vont convaincre la jeune fille de reprendre ses études, de ne pas tout abandonner. Ils l'aident à travailler, lui conseillent des livres, lui ouvrent des horizons. L'ambiance est électrique, tendue. Hanna a souvent du mal à supporter ces deux aînés plus turbulents et destructeurs qu'elle. Mais Byron Burns et Bobby Long ne cèdent pas et voient dans le sort de la jeune fille une occasion de racheter leurs échecs et leurs excès.
