"Information society" and "media society" have become entral concepts used to describe the contemporary society. Mediapolis is a critical, multi-disciplinary anthology that discusses the problems and possibilities of digital culture and information age. Instead of technological determinism or techno-optimistic rhetoric the book focuses on media critical, analytical and philosophical approach to contemporary media cultures, future technologies, and electronic utopias.
The anthology is divided into four parts: (1) Texts, Hypertexts, and Narratology, (2) Semiotic and Philosophical Approaches, (3) Aspects of Media and Technology Criticism, (4) Media Cultural Developments. Such concepts and technologies as multimedia, hypertext, television, computer networks, virtual realities, cyborgs, and cyber sex are a subject to a reflective and critical analysis in the volume.
The main disciplines shared by the contributors are philosophy, semiotics, as well as media and communication studies.
The following topics, among others, are discussed in the articles: the textual theory of hypertext, multimedia literature, phenomenology, Nelson Goodman's philosophy of languages, Jean-Luc Godard as media philosopher, American television discourse, Internet in Russia, tomorrow's media environments, and the controversial advertising of Benetton.
The editor is a media scholar and university teacher at the University of Vaasa (Finland), Dept. of Communication Studies.
