The series publishes state-of-the-art work on core areas of linguistics across theoretical frameworks as well as studies that provide new insights by building bridges to neighbouring fields such as neuroscience and cognitive science. The series considers itself a forum for cutting-edge research based on solid empirical data on language in its various manifestations, including sign languages. It regards linguistic variation in its synchronic and diachronic dimensions as well as in its social contexts as important sources of insight for a better understanding of the design of linguistic systems and the ecology and evolution of language.

Book Description Walter de Gruyter Co, Germany, 2000. Hardback. Condition: New. Reprint 2011 ed.. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.This book analyzes structures in (early) Indo-European languages that traditionally have been difficult to account for: impersonal verbs, mihi est constructions to express possession, mihi est constructions in combination with a nominal form of the verb, and absolute constructions. It is argued that they are inherited from Proto-Indo- European and that they are residues of a stage at which the proto-language was non-nominative. Their gradual replacement with modern transitive structures, as demonstrated in detail in the development of Latin and French, shows the increasing importance of transitivity in the development of Indo-European.
