In the sphere of reality, explosions cannot disappear and the only real issue under discussion is how to overcome the fatal choice between stagnation and catastrophe.
-Juri Lotman
Culture and Explosion captures the final words of legendary semiotician Juri Lotman, delving deep into the connection between the human existence and the culture it exists within. Lotman dredges dozens of questions to the surface and subsequently answers them with remarkable precision. In every chapter Lotman discusses and demonstrates how culture influences the way that humans experience "reality," utilizing real life examples. Lotman's renowned erudition is showcased in a host of well-chosen illustrations from history, literature, art and right across the humanities.
Now, translated by Wilma Clark and appearing in English for the very first time, Culture and Explosion has been made accessible to students, researchers in semiotics, cultural/literary studies and Russian studies worldwide, and anyone with an interest in understanding Juri Lotman’s view on contemporary intellectual life.
