In 1952 the German Supreme Court banned the right-wing SRP; 50 years later it did not take the same step against the NPD. This study examines changes in law surrounding the banning of political parties, as well as the development of right-wing extremism in Germany. It comes to the conclusion that the legal procedure to ban political parties has been influenced by the media, political calculations, and public debates.
