Synopsis
When she meets him in the twenties in the city by the lake, she is young and beautiful and rich. He, on the other hand, is a penniless young man who has only one thing in mind: music. "The Beloved Mother" is about the unrequited love of Clara's life - the famous conductor Edwin told by her son after her death. It is also a novel about the music, about the money and the power, and about the reversal of conditions. She works for him and loves him with the same dedication as his music. He knows nothing of this love, marries another, and becomes famous. He breaks Clara's heart and her love for Edwin becomes a silent obsession. Clara's feelings are never made to look pathetic and the story is told with great compassion and boldness. Urs Widmer was born in 1938 in Basel and he works as a freelance writer. His novels and plays have won numerous awards. The text is in German.
