Da Papier in den 50er Jahren teuer ist, bekommt er die Korrekturbögen als Sudelpapier mit dem Verbot, die Rückseiten zu lesen. Eines Tages tut er es doch und liest von der Irrfahrt und Heimkehr eines deutschen Soldaten aus Sibirien, seiner Suche nach seiner Frau. Als der Soldat schließlich die Stadt, das Haus, die Wohnung findet und seine Frau die Tür aufmacht, steht ein anderer Mann neben ihr und trägt sie dessen Kind auf dem Arm. Er. Nein, Peter Debauer erfährt nicht, was dann passiert. Er hat die Korrekturbögen mit dem Ende des Romans schon beschrieben, bekritzelt und weggeworfen.
