One man made such a powerful impression upon the turbulent period between the French Revolution in 1789 and the Vienna Congress in 1815 that is has understandably come to be coupled with his name: Napolean Bonaparte. His political and military strategy plus its origins, motive forces and effects - including its repercussions for the whole of Europe - continue to arouse great interest. He dragged the world into the 19th century. His regime had various facets, including some extremely dubious ones. Yet at the same time he pushed open one door after another on the Continent, helped to eradicate the prevailing rulers and to prepare the soil ready for the new seed to take root. A wide-ranging examination of social life in Napoleon's time has hitherto been missing from the plethora of works which have been published on this subject. This book thus breaks new ground.
