These events draw attention towards a major issue in our modern society that has been even worse in history: gender equality. And not only gender equality on a man to woman basis, but also equality among individuals of the same gender regarding their skin color, religion, socio-economic status and education. Especially postcolonial feminism focuses on the effects of long-term influences of colonialism bringing disadvantages to women who are non-white and non-Western. Shobha Rao's book "Girls Burn Brighter" tells a story of two women going through society's restrictive norms and cruelties within the Indian and American.
