Das änderte sich nicht, als sie den Bauernhof ihrer Familie verließ und den Bäckermeister Max Graf heiratete. Sie bekam elf Kinder, von denen acht erwachsen wurden, und blieb trotz aller Ängste, die sie in Kriegs- und Gefahrenzeiten ausstand, der ruhende Pol des Bäckerhauses am Starnberger See. Oskar Maria Graf hat mit diesem Porträt seiner Mutter nicht nur eine Chronik dörflichen Lebens in Oberbayern geschaffen, sondern auch einen sozial- und zeitkritischen Roman von großer poetischer Kraft.
