Die Legende vom heiligen Trinker ist eine Novelle von Joseph Roth. Andreas, der Trinker, ein Mann von Ehre, will – über die ganze Legende hinweg – geliehenes Geld zurückbringen, kommt aber nicht dazu, eben, weil er trinkt. Andreas war früher, wie sein Vater, als Kohlenarbeiter beschäftigt. Weil man in Frankreich Kohlenarbeiter gesucht hatte, war er dorthin gegangen und hatte in den Gruben von Quebecque gearbeitet. Einquartiert war er bei dem Ehepaar Schebiec gewesen, hatte mit Frau Karoline geschlafen, war vom Ehemann ertappt worden und hatte ihn in Notwehr erschlagen. Dafür hatte Andreas zwei Jahre im Gefängnis gesessen.

Moses Joseph Roth (1894 -1939 ) war ein österreichischer Schriftsteller und Journalist. Roth war seinen Zeitgenossen in erster Linie als Journalist bekannt und journalistische Arbeiten machen gut die Hälfte seines Werkes aus. Am 30. Januar 1933, dem Tag von Hitlers Ernennung zum Reichskanzler, verließ Roth Deutsch-land. Roths Bücher wurden Opfer der Bücherverbrennungen durch die Nationalsozialisten. Roth wählte als Ort seines Exils zunächst Paris, unternahm aber diverse, teils mehrmonatige Reisen, unter anderem in die Niederlande, nach Österreich und nach Polen. Von Juni 1934 bis Juni 1935 hielt sich Roth, wie viele andere Emigranten, an der französischen Riviera auf. Zusammen mit Hermann Kesten und Heinrich Mann mieteten Roth und Manga Bell ein Haus in Nizza.

Wie stets in seinen Erzähltexten setzt Roth einen mühelos gleitenden, melodiösen Sprachfluss in Gang, dem dennoch das Gepräge eines »Testaments« zu Eigen ist: So charakterisierte der Autor selbst in düsterer Vorahnung seine 1939 entstandene »Legende«. Der eigene Tod mit 45 Jahren wird mit bestürzender Konsequenz und gleichwohl in hoffnungsvollem Tonfall vorweggenommen - sollte dies doch wirklich die letzte Erzählung einer sensiblen Künstlernatur bleiben, für die Poetsein bedeutete, den »Narren, oder Bettler, oder alles zugleich« vorzustellen.
