Juni 1955) ist eine schottische Krimi-Autorin. Leben: McDermid kommt aus Kirkcaldy und besuchte das St. Hilda's College in Oxford. Sie war die erste Studentin, die von einer staatlichen Schule in Schottland stammte. Während des Studiums war sie Vorsitzende der Studentenvertretung. Nach dem Abschluss wurde sie Journalistin und war auch als Bühnenautorin erfolgreich. Es dauerte jedoch bis 1987, bis sie mit Die Reportage ihren ersten Erfolg als Romanautorin hatte.
