Der Titel meint aber auch jene Zeit, als im Krieg die Bronzeglocken für die Rüstung beschlagnahmt werden. Frühjahr 1943: Der totale Krieg ist ausgerufen. Stalingrad ist gefallen, die Soldaten gehen im Osten "planmäßig" zurück und bringen den Krieg mit Hause. Es ist Karfreitag-Passionstag. Die Menschen ahnen, dß eine Epoche zu Ende geht, aber noch verschließen sie ihre Augen vor der drohenden Katastrophe, deren Anzeichen schon täglich zu spüren sind. Vor der Kirche "Peter und Paul" hat sich eine Menge Neigieriger versammelt, um die Glockenabnahme mitzuerleben. Der Pfarrer hatte diesen Tag bestimmt als stummen Protest: die Zeit ohne Glocken bricht an, die gottlose Zeiz vor dem Ende. Immer mehr Frauen tragen Schwart, viele Männer fehlen, der letzte "Transport" Gleiwitzer Juden geht nach Auschwitz. Aber trotz aller drohender Vorzeichen geht das Leben weiter. Wie zum Trotz werden Kinder geboren, wird geliebt und gehaßt, wird geprahlt und verdrängt, werden kleine und große Geschäfte gemacht, ja, in der Vorahnung der Katastrophe lebt man rücksichtsloser, ungehemmter, orgiastischer nach dem Motte: genieße den Krieg, der Friede wird furchtbar sein.
