Mark Twains 1876 veröffentlichter humoristischer Roman ist wesentlich von der Jugend des Autors in der am Mississippi gelegenen Kleinstadt Hannibal inspiriert, die im Roman St. Petersburg heißt. Zusammen mit seinem Freund Huckleberry Finn erlebt der notorische Schulschwänzer Tom eine Reihe von Abenteuern, die jedoch rasch die Grenzen harmloser Kinderspiele überschreiten: So verstecken sich Tom und Huck auf einer Flussinsel und lösen damit eine groß angelegte Suchaktion der Bewohner aus, werden in einen Mordfall verwickelt und finden schließlich sogar einen Schatz unklarer Herkunft.
