Frau Zipper, am Grabe, weint nicht. Alle ihre Tränen hat sie längst vergossen, denkt der Erzähler ."(Verlagstext). Autorenporträt: Joseph Roth wurde am 2. September 1894 als Sohn jüdischer Eltern in Brody (Ostgalizien) geboren, studierte Literaturwissenschaften in Wien und Lemberg und nahm als Soldat am Ersten Weltkrieg teil. Ab 1916 veröffentlichte er Erzählungen und Romane, lebte ab 1918 als Journalist in Wien, dann Berlin, und war von 19231932 Korrespondent der Frankfurter Zeitung. Anfang der 1930er Jahre erlangte er mit den Romanen Hiob und Radetzkymarsch Weltruhm. 1933 emigrierte Roth nach Frankreich. Er starb am 27.
