So eröffnet Joseph Roth seinen Bericht über die Odyssee des Franz Tunda, eines österreichischen Offiziers im Ersten Weltkrieg, der aus der russischen Kriegsgefangenschaft flieht. Auf seiner abenteuerlichen Reise gerät er in die Wirren des russischen Bürgerkriegs, in die kommunistische Avantgarde und in die Arme einer schönen Georgierin. Doch nirgends kommt Tunda an. Baku, Moskau, Wien, Paris - jeder Ort erweist sich bloß als weitere Etappe seiner Flucht.

About the Author
Joseph Roth (1894-1939) was the great elegist of the cosmopolitan culture that flourished in the dying days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He published several books and articles before his untimely death at the age of 44. Roth s writing has been admired by J. M. Coetzee, Jeffrey Eugenides, Elie Wiesel, and Nadine Gordimer, among many others.

September 1894 als Sohn judischer Eltern in Brody (Ostgalizien) geboren, studierte Literaturwissenschaften in Wien und Lemberg und nahm als Soldat am Ersten Weltkrieg teil. Ab 1916 veroffentlichte er Erzahlungen und Romane, lebte ab 1918 als Journalist in Wien, dann Berlin, und war von 1923-1932 Korrespondent der Frankfurter Zeitung. Anfang der 1930er Jahre erlangte er mit den Romanen Hiob und Radetzkymarsch Weltruhm. 1933 emigrierte Roth nach Frankreich. Er starb am 27.
