Este volumen reúne una selección de los artículos que Joseph Roth dedicó al Berlín de los años veinte. En ellos el novelista y periodista recrea con mano maestra la peculiar atmósfera que reinaba en la capital alemana durante la República de Weimar. Ningún ambiente de la ciudad le es ajeno, se interesa tanto por los grandes almacenes, los parques públicos y la naciente industria del espectáculo como por los medios de transporte, los barrios pobres en los que vivían los inmigrantes judíos, los baños turcos y los garitos frecuentados por delincuentes de medio pelo. "Yo dibujo el rostro del tiempo" afirmó en una ocasión refiriéndose a su cometido como reportero. Nada más cierto: de la lectura de estos textos, en su gran mayoría inéditos en castellano, escritos entre 1920 y 1933 y publicados en distintos periódicos, emerge el poderoso retrato de una metrópoli inquieta y deslumbrante en uno de los momentos más críticos de su historia.
