Synopsis
Roma, 1508. Il giovane Salaì, apprendista pittore e figlio adottivo di Leonardo da Vinci, è appena giunto da Firenze nella Città Eterna su incarico del suo celebre patrigno. Deve trovare a tutti i costi un libro appena stampato nella lontana Alsazia, in cui è contenuta la prima carta geografica dell'America. Ma nessuno lo deve sapere. Leonardo infatti, invidiosissimo di Colombo, Vespucci e degli altri grandi esploratori, vuole plagiare la carta dell'America e darla alle stampe a suo nome, per fare bella figura con gli amici fiorentini. La missione si rivela subito piena di pericoli. Salaì riceve prima oscure minacce di morte, e poi viene rapito da un commando di agitatori politici, che possiedono una copia del prezioso libro, ma sono convinti che faccia parte di una colossale congiura. Il figlioccio di Leonardo dovrà usare tutto il suo straordinario acume per districarsi tra librai traditori, feroci usurai, prostitute d'alto bordo e spericolati sovversivi. In più il bel Salaì, gran sciupafemmine, dovrà fare i conti, con i suoi antichi amori, che hanno lasciato alcuni strascichi inattesi. Come in ogni buon intrigo, alla fine verrà incastrato e finirà in catene davanti a un giudice, e solo all'ultima pagina sapremo se riuscirà a scampare alla forca.
