Synopsis
McCarthyho opus magnum, román Suttree, je situován do padesátých let 20. století a má dva hlavní hrdiny. Prvním je Cornelius Suttree, mladík v Kristových letech, podivín, povaleč a poustevník, jenž sešel z pravé životní cesty a nyní v černé grotesce hledá sám sebe i vlastní spásu. Druhým je město samo – Knoxville malebný, malátný i mokvavý, „karneval tvarů“, „architektonický bastard“, „kloaka maxima“. Suttree se tímto městským peklem plným odpadlíků, vyděděnců a ztracenců nahodile protlouká – bez spolehlivého průvodce, zato s mnoha svéráznými souputníky – a s hořkostí shledává, že i život bez cíle může být cestou, avšak že kroužením na místě svou neklidnou duši nemůže nikdy naplnit.Autobiografické dílo, na němž McCarthy pracoval více než dvě desetiletí, se vyznačuje mnohovrstevným vyprávěním, jazykovou invencí, myšlenkovou hloubkou, existenciálními podtóny a v neposlední řadě svébytnou komikou. Suttree završuje rané tennesseeské období autorovy tvorby a spolu s Krvavým poledníkem (1985) a Cestou (2006) představuje její naprostý vrchol.Doslov „Putování člověka bez tváře městskými stokami“ napsal Marcel Arbeit.Přebal s použitím ilustrace Jozefa Gertliho Danglára a grafickou úpravu navrhl Libor Batrla.
