Synopsis

What happens when scholars approach the prophetic books from a perspective informed by questions of idealized future, utopia, and the opposite vision, dystopia? When Ehud Ben Zvi, Mark J. Boda, Michael H. Floyd, Hann Liss, Matthew Neujahr, Julia M. O'Brien, Kathleen M. O'Connor, Jack M. Sasson, Steven J. Schweitzer, Daniel L. Msith-Christopher, and Marvin A. Sweeney intervene, the result is an engaging polypho9ny. Their conversation focuses on ancient contexts of prophetic literature, but deals at times also with habits of thinking about prophetic literature among critical scholars. It leads, among others, to numerous insights on literary and ideological features of these books, and on the social circumstances in which these texts were produced and read, as well on their roles within society and the discursive worlds of which they were an integral part. Although this volume focuses on prophetic literature, many of the arguments advanced here bear implications for the study of utopian and dystopian images in ancient Israel in general.
