Vor dem Hintergrund ausführlicher theoretischer Überlegungen wird die These vertreten, daß sich die moderne Gesellschaft als ,Inszenierungsgesellschaft" charakterisieren läßt. Thematisch reicht das Spektrum des Bandes vom Klatschgespräch über das "Theater der Wissenschaft" bis zu den "Seifenopern" des Fernsehens.
