Synopsis
Eine großangelegte Familien-Saga, ein exemplarischer Zeitroman. Ralph Giordano formt einen bisher wenig beachteten Stoff episch aus: Er erzählt vom Schicksal sogenannter "jüdischer Mischlinge" in den Jahren der nationalsozialistischen Gewaltherrschaft. Die Vorgeschichte beginnt Ende des letzten Jahrhunderts, die eigentliche Handlung setzt vor 1933 ein und führt in die ersten Nachkriegsjahre. Ihr Schauplatz: Hamburg - von den Elbvororten bis zum Stadtpark, von Barmbek im Norden bis zum Hafen im Süden, mit unvergeßlichen, in den dramatischen Ablauf verwobenen Gestalten, Bildern, Situationen. Fast unglaublich ist diese Geschichte: Der Autor hat mit seiner Phantasie die nackte Realität überhöht; es ist ihm gelungen, eine sinnfällige Schilderung von Menschen unter bestimmten Bedingungen zu schaffen und eine Zeit zurückzurufen, die mit überwältigender Macht in das Leben aller eingegriffen hat. Er hat das Geschehen und die Figuren frei gestaltet. Hier sind die kleinen Leute mit ihren Schwächen unter dem grausamen Druck des herrschenden Bösen, mit ihren liebenswerten Zügen, mit dem Ausmaß des ihnen zugefügten Leides und der Fähigkeit zum Überleben. Nichts wird geschönt, keine bittere Erkenntnis verschwiegen. Doch was immer es an Furchtbarem gab: die Liebe zu Hamburg, diese ganz unsentimentale Heimatliebe, bleibt unerschüttert und ist entscheidend für die Zukunft der Bertinis.
