Ghana is situated on the West Coast of Africa, off the Gulf of Guinea. It occupies a land area of 238,589 square kilometres and is bordered on the west by Cote d’Ivoire, east by Togo and the north by Burkina Faso. Ghana’s economy is mainly agricultural with crops produced for both local consumption and exports. Minerals and timber also contribute to the country’s earnings. In 2009, Ghana attained lower middle-income status and in 2010, became an oil producing country. Currently, the country is said to have one of the fastest growing economies in the world, however, the continuous rapid population growth is threatening the economic progress achieved and has implications for the development of the country.
