Synopsis

The eye is a vital organ, which can easily be affected by direct injury or by local or systemic diseases. Affections of the eyes constitute an important part of small and companion animal practice. Intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement is crucial for diagnosis and management of patients with glaucoma and those undergoing ophthalmic surgery. Owing to the lack of awareness among breeders and clinicians, ocular problems in domestic animals are getting worse by the day and early diagnosis with unaided eyes is difficult. Prevalence study on ocular affections will provide information on ocular diseases and also help to explore the diagnostic possibilities and treatment options, hence the need for this work. Routine IOP measurement is a helpful aid in clinical examination of the eye, as this would detect early IOP changes and inform management. This work presents a retrospective study that sought to determine the incidence and pattern of distribution of diagnosed and treated ophthalmic affections in dogs as well as documentation of the IOP values of dogs, with a view to providing a data base both on the incidence and IOP values in the study location.
