Die Publikation rückt die bisher wenig beachtete Skulptur des 19. Jahrhunderts in Rom ins Zentrum. Während die Kunstgeschichte den Siegeszug der Moderne meist als französische Malereigeschichte erzählt und die römische Skulptur als veraltete, akademische Wiederholung klassizistischer Formen abtut, zeigen die Beiträge ihre unerwartete Vitalität und Internationalität auf. Rom blieb trotz der aufstrebenden Kunstzentren Paris und London ein globaler Mittelpunkt der Bildhauerei. Hier entstanden innovative Werke, die weltweit exportiert wurden und hier liegen auch die Anfänge der amerikanischen Skulptur.
