Dieses Buch ist weder eine weitere Heldensaga, noch eine militärische Auflistung oder gar ein persönliches Kriegstagebuch. Es schildert die ganz persönlichen Erlebnisse des Willi Blüm und seiner Kameraden auf dem deutschen U-Boot U-269 ab 1941 und weiter über das Kriegsende hinaus bis in die Gefangenschaft. Im Buch enthalten sind insgesamt 64 Bilder und Abbildungen zeitgeschichtlicher Dokumente. Der Anhang enthält u.a. eine umfangreiche Dokumentation über die Chronologie von U-269, die Mannschaftsliste, den detaillierten Bericht über die Versenkung, Position und Bilder des Wracks und die Geschichte einer späten Vaterschaft. Auch auf das Schicksal derer, die es nicht überlebt haben, wird beispielhaft eingegangen. Die Ausgabe 2016 wurde um Auszüge der Ermittlungsakten ergänzt, die nach dem Freitod des ersten Kommandanten Karl Heinrich Harlfinger angelegt wurden.
