Schutzumschlag mit stärkeren Gebrauchsspuren: berieben, angeschmutzt, mit Randläsuren und mit starken Einrissen, sonst ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar ohne Anstreichungen. - August Sander - ein großer Name in der Geschichte der Photographie und das Paradebeispiel für widerlegten Dilettantismus und eingeholte Meisterschaft! Als er 1890 bei jemandem abguckte, wie man am gescheitesten durch die Linse schaut, war August Sander noch ein junger Hilfsarbeiter auf den Halden einer Siegerländer Eisenerzgrube. Als man ihn 1961 mit dem Kulturpreis der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Photographie ehrte, hatte es die internationale Fachwelt mit einem Mann zu tun, der zwar Autodidakt, dem aber die Mühe autodidaktischer Anstrengungen nicht anzusehen war. «Abzugucken» blieb jetzt anderen überlassen, nicht vorbehaltlos, aber doch in dem Bewußtsein, eine der unerbittlichsten photographischen «Einstellungen» vor sich zu haben, die sich denken läßt: den Menschen ohne Maske. Zu einem theatrum mundi und seinen unzähligen Statisten zieht ein großer Photograph den Vorhang auf. Zu Zeiten modischer Retusche und lieblicher Verharmlosung verzichtet er auf jegliches Make-up. Die Überlagerungen des Individuellen vertragen es nicht, sowenig wie die Wirklichkeit, wenn sie den Menschen als das soziologische Produkt seiner Umwelt denkt. So sind es zwar Menschen, die photographiert werden, doch Typen, konkretisierte Formeln, unmenschlich in der Anonymität versunkene Gesichter, die das Bild festhält. Nicht lieblose Praktik sorgt dafür, sondern ein scharfsinniger unmerklicher Regiewechsel, der das Modell im Glauben an seine eindrucksvolle Pose beläßt und es doch gerade mitsamt dieser Pose photographisch entlarvt - um es besser zu verstehen, als es sich selbst verstand. Gunther Sander, der Sohn August Sanders und selbst Photograph, erzählt das Leben seines Vaters, schlicht und mit der Distanz, die nötig ist, wenn eine Biographie nicht resümieren, sondern sprechen soll.
