Synopsis

Among the first Chinese artists to turn to performance art, Zhang Huan, a member of the "Beijing East Village" community, focused, in his early work, on submitting his naked body to extreme psychological and physical situations. Of late, theatricality and narrative have played increasing larger roles in his work, as in a 1997 piece in which he commissioned a group of farmworkers to climb into a fish pond near Beijing, thus creating an image representing the flooding of cities by masses from the country.

Review

One of the foremost artists in China's new wave, Zhang Huan creates personal and politicised work that encompasses performance art, photography, painting, installation and sculpture. Zhang Huan (Phaidon, GBP24.95), is a monograph assessing the impact of his explorations of identity, transgression and spirituality. It takes in his early, often extreme, performance art in China and New York - My New York (pictured), for the 2002 Whitney Biennial, saw him donning a suit sewn from raw beef, imitating the bodybuilders he had seen who tried to adopt an appearance of strength to hide their real weakness and unease - and takes us up to his laboriously created, deeply affected ash paintings and sculptures, created with incense ash collected from Shanghai temples. --Metro, 10 June, 2009

Softcover. Condition: Gut bis sehr gut. 1. Auflage. 120 pp., 64 ills. 21.00 x 28.00 cm - Zhang Huan, born in 1965 in the Chinese province of Honan, was among the first artists in China who turned to performance art at the beginning of the nineties turned to performance art. Although its underground-based protagonists were rarely permitted to appear publicly in Beijing, the "Beijing East Village" artist colony drew the attention of the Western world amazingly fast. Since the middle of the nineties, Huan's works could be viewed in Europe, Japan and the U.S., at first chiefly on video or via photographs. In 1998 he showed his first performance to a larger public in New York, where he currently lives and works as an artist. At the centre of Huan´s early works were psychological and physical extreme situations to which he submitted his naked body. For his formally stringent work To Raise the Water Level in a Fish Pond, Huan had a group of farm workers climb into a fish pond near Beijing in 1997, thus creating an image representing the drift to the cities, the flooding of cities with vast numbers of people, and the assimilation of individuals in an underprivileged mass without vote. Here, he used choreography for the first time in his work. On the whole, theatrical concepts and narrative structures have started to play a larger role in Huan´s work since the end of the nineties.
