Synopsis
In the staged, digitally altered photographs presented in this volume, Chinese artist Chi Peng (born 1981) casts himself in a range of daring roles, fleeing an airplane attack nude or flying over the horizon with dragonfly wings. Feelings of childhood isolation are transformed into imaginative, sometimes harrowing adult play (a gesture the artist attributes to China's one-child policy).

Die Szenarien variieren hierbei enorm: So fliehen in der Serie Sprinting Forward mehrere Chi Pengs nackt vor einem Angriff roter Flugzeuge und in seiner Dream-Serie fliegt er in vielfacher Ausführung mit Libellenflügeln über das Meer, einem unbestimmten Horizont entgegen. Chi Peng wuchs wie viele seiner Zeitgenossen aufgrund Chinas Ein-Kind-Politik ohne Geschwister auf, und die Zeit des Heranwachsens und Erwachsenwerdens sowie Fragen nach sexueller Identität sind wichtige Themen in seinen Arbeiten. Aber auch Chinas unaufhaltsamer Fortschritt und die damit einhergehenden Gefühle von Optimismus, Zweifel, Unsicherheit und Einsamkeit finden sich in seinen Bildern, in denen Realität und Fiktion zusammentreffen. 152 pp. Englisch.
