Showcasing the work of Thomas Demand, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Andreas Gursky, and Jeff Wall, this book presents four photographers whose images skillfully interrogate the possibilities and limitations of their medium.
Working with both analog and digital technologies, each photographer not only formulates a wholly distinct way of seeing reality but also analyzes human perception itself, inviting viewers to individually interpret their works. Their subjects range from fleeting everyday scenes to mysterious events and re-enacted historical happenings. What these images all share is the artists’ intent to meld the documentary—traditionally seen as photography’s cardinal virtue—with the fictional. This exclusive volume presents the works of the stars of the contemporary international photography scene.

About the Authors
In 2009, the entrepreneurial Brenninkmeijer family founded the Draiflessen Collection in their Westphalian hometown of Mettingen. In addition to a conference center and museum, the Draiflessen Collection was created with presentation areas for temporary exhibitions, as well as archive and storage rooms. Its purpose is to foster artistic creativity and to preserve and present works of art and cultural objects.
Julia Franck is the author of five novels and a short story collection and was awarded the German Book Prize in 2007 for her novel The Blindness of the Heart.
Jonas Lüscher won the Swiss Book Prize in 2017 for his novel Kraft.
Angela Steidele has written several books and was awarded the Bavarian Book Prize for her novel about Ludwig II’s circle, Rosenstengel.
George Pavlopoulos is the author of three novels and a short story collection.
