The collective output of the Middle European centers of glass production demonstrates a thoroughly modern approach to the craft. While most other histories of modernism focus on the primacy of pure form, "Glass of the Avant-Garde" chronicles the use of ornament, in a wide variety of styles and techniques, by early twentieth-century designers. The catalogue's appendix, with its table of marks, is especially valuable for collectors and experts, while its stunning color plates and informative texts provide an excellent introduction to modern glass for anyone interested in the field.
About the Author
The Authors: Torsten Brohan is a native of Dusseldorf who now lives in New York City. He is a scholar and collector of early twentieth century art, whose passion for rare and elusive works by pioneers of modernism shaped his world-famous collection of avant-garde glass.
Dr. Martin Eidelberg is a professor at Rutgers University and has written on twentieth-century design and decorative arts. Among his publiations are "E. Colonna" (1983), "Masterworks of Louis Comfort Tiffany" (1989), and Design 1935-1965: What Modern Was" (1991)
