Transport played a crucial role in what historians still refer to as the "industrial revolution", a revolution which in reality was a much more complex process sweeping through Europe in the course of the 19th century. Commonly, the railways have been viewed as the "revolutionary transport system", not least because the "steam engine put on rails" was itself a product of the new industrial age. Much less attention has been paid to then-existing "pre-industrial" modes of transport like roads, rivers, canals, and coastal shipping. By looking at the history of inland navigation in industrializing Europe, this book aspires to be a corrective. It points toward a mode of transport which - while always said to have been on the verge of obsolescence - was able to modernize and adapt to the industrial age at least in some of the countries studied, and even to reappear there as a challenger to the railways by the end of the century. The volume contains papers and commentaries of an international conference held at the Institute of European History, Mainz, in September 1993. The purpose of the conference was to assemble a forum of experts - economic historians, economists, geographers - for an international comparison of recent research on the economic history of European river and canal transport during the 19th century. This aim has likewise become the major theme of the conference's printed proceedings. Seventeen renowned specialists in transport history from eleven countries offer new insights on the performance of a so-called "preindustrial" mode of transport under the impact of industrialization, and on the relationship between water-borne transport and economic growth in nineteenth-century Europe.
