Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn (1606-1669) fue uno de los artistas más complejos y polifacéticos del siglo 17. De su periodo inicial en Leiden a sus fases tempranas y tardías en Amsterdam, las etapas de la carrera de Rembrandt reflejan los desarrollos artísticos e intelectuales del siglo. Después de la ruptura de sus estudios en Leiden, el joven Rembrandt formó como pintor durante dos años y, finalmente, estableció su propio taller de pintura. Característica del período Leiden son sus historias bíblicas, como La resurrección de Lázaro, pero las raíces de los retratos de Rembrandt, alimentada por sus intensos estudios de fisonomía, también podrá encontrar en estos mismos años. Más tarde, en Amsterdam, la perfección de las semejanzas de Rembrandt inicialmente le ganó el favor de numerosos mecenas, pero el artista pronto superó sus expectativas. Trascendiendo los modos tradicionales de presentación, Rembrandt compuso sus retratos de la misma manera en la que él había construido antes sus escenas. Los resultados son visibles, por ejemplo, en el famoso retrato de grupo La lección de anatomía del Dr. Nicolaes Tulp de 1632. En la última fase del trabajo-cuando de Rembrandt, plagado de problemas financieros, se había retirado a la reclusión-que ya no es posible distinguir entre pinturas y retratos de eventos.
