Italian exhibition design is unique insofar as it integrates the historic space with that of the exhibition, involving not only restoration and conservation but also a modern approach to architectural design deriving from the historical tradition of adding to what has already been built. The book illustrates this methodology with a variety of exhibition installations realized in Italy that have allowed works of art, handicrafts and the products of industry to be displayed to their best advantage.
Thus this study interprets exhibition design as a means of transformation and investigation of spaces and materials that is capable of propagating and redefining the equilibrium existing between interiors and their functions, and between the users and the works. This book is, therefore an invaluable tool for those wishing to learn as much as possible about the new projects, with special emphasis being placed on the technical details and the materials used.
Pietro Carlo Pellegrini, who was born in Lucca in 1957, studied at the universities of Rome and Pescara, where he graduated in 1983. He is now professor of architectural design in the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Genoa. His projects have been published in books and journals, including Domus, Casabella Area, Detail and Bauwelt.
