Synopsis
Pop art is generally considered to be an American invention – the New World’s break with the serious artistic attitudes of Europe. In fact, the term was first coined in the mid-1950s by the English art critic Lawrence Alloway, and referred initially not to art but to commercial mass culture. Europop explores the emergence in Europe of a rich and diverse art form that eventually evolved into a worldwide phenomenon. This profusely illustrated survey examines the links between European Pop art and other artistic currents and movements, including Nouveau Réalisme, Fluxus and Arte Povera. Essays trace the beginnings of Pop from London to Paris and from Düsseldorf to Milan, offering a new interpretation of a revolutionary chapter in the history of modern art.
